Terms and conditions
CONDITIONS OF ENTRY
- The competition is open to Australian secondary students enrolled in Year 11 or Year 12, or equivalent studies in 2013.
- A competitor may enter an unlimited number of entries.
- Each entry should be no longer than 10 minutes in length, including titles and credits.
- Entries should be suitable for public viewing and must not contain obscene or offensive content as judged by BUFTA officials (eg. adult themes, violence, drug use, coarse language, nudity).
- All entries must be submitted via the online application form at www.bufta.com.au in Quicktime format between 29th April – 27th September 2013. Other delivery forms may be accepted if written permission is obtained from the Faculty Events Coordinator (hssevents@bond.edu.au) at least 10 days prior to the competition close date.
- Only one person may be the representative of the film. Any prize or requests for publicity will be directed to this person.
- All key pre-production, production and post-production roles must only be undertaken by high school students or graduates of no more than 2-years. Older people, parents and film and television professionals can mentor and advise students, but not actually perform the roles in any way or actively assist in the performance of the roles.
- Films must have been made between 1st January 2013 and 27th September 2013.
- Previous BUFTA entries will not be accepted.
- All submissions must be original (both audio and video material) and must not include copyright material.
- The quality of the film is the student’s responsibility. The film submitted and received within the entry period is the version that will be judged. No subsequent versions will be accepted after the competition close date.
- The University reserve the right to redesignate films they believe have been improperly placed in a category, to a more appropriate one.
- The organisers of BUFTA may use finalist films or excerpts from it for teaching purposes and to promote the competition to the public by whatever means it sees fit. This includes online, print and multimedia. We retain this right indefinitely despite additional competitions the film may be entered into.
- The scholarship winner MUST be willing to be involved in promotional activity arranged by the University. Entry in the competition is deemed as accepting this obligation.
- All decisions of the University and judges are final.
- All prizes are non-transferable or redeemable for cash.
- Winners will be announced at the BUFTA Gala Awards ceremony on 23rd November 2013.
- You must agree to these terms and conditions when submitting a film.
CATEGORY DETAILS
Definitions of film categories:
Documentary: Nonfictional film intended to document some aspect of reality, primarily for the purpose of instruction or to maintain a historical record.
Comedy: The main emphasis is on humour with the aim of amusing, entertaining and eliciting laughter. This genre humorously exaggerates situations, actions, characters and the way we interact to each other.
Drama: The in-depth development of realistic characters dealing with emotional themes.
Experimental: Experimental films are often characterised by the absence of linear narrative, the use of abstracting techniques such as out-of-focus, painting or scratching on film, rapid editing. The goal is often to place the viewer in a more active and more thoughtful relationship to the film.
Music Video: The integration of a song and imagery.
Animation: Fictional film which wholly uses drawn or created 2D or 3D artwork or static physical models filmed in such a manner as to create the illusion of physical movement.
PRIZE DETAILS
Prizes will be presented to the winners at the Gala Ceremony on Saturday 23rd November, 2013. The prizes are final, non-transferable and cannot be exchanged or redeemed for cash.
OVERALL BEST FILMMAKER AWARD
The winner of the Overall Best Filmmaker award will receive a full tuition scholarship to study a Bachelor of Film and Television at Bond University. This prize is non -transferrable or redeemable for cash. The winner will be required to satisfy the University’s admission criteria and enrol to commence study by Semester 1 in 2015 in a fulltime capacity (a minimum of three subjects per semester, normally four). The Dean has discretion to vary the eligibility criteria. This prize covers tuition only and will not provide for accommodation, living expenses, text books, consumables, travel or other personal or incidental expenses. If the student fails a subject, the student will be asked to explain their performance. The Dean will consider the explanation and decide whether to recommend continuation of the scholarship. Termination of the Scholarship will be at the Dean’s discretion after consideration of a written recommendation from the Director of Film and Television.
If the major prize winner is also a category winner and therefore the recipient of a subject award, only one or the other may be used.
NOTE: The Scholarship will not cover tuition fees associated with enrolment in repeat or substitute subjects.
The overall best filmmaker will be selected by the BUFTA judging panel as having created the best film overall and shown the greatest potential.
CATEGORY PRIZES
The winner of each category will receive a scholarship to study one subject from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The winner may select one subject from the following: Editing 1, Cinematography & Lighting, Screenwriting 1,Television 1: Studio. These first year subjects have no prerequisites and will count as credit towards the full Bachelor of Film and Television degree should the student choose to enrol. Enrolment in one of the above listed subjects must be completed to commence study by Semester 1 in 2015. This prize is non-transferable and not redeemable for cash. If the category winner is also the major prize winner and therefore the recipient of a full scholarship, only one or the other may be used. The category award winners will be selected by the BUFTA judging panel as having demonstrated excellent skill and creativity
in the relevant category.
CRAFT AWARD PRIZES
The winner of each craft award will receive a $250 VideoPro gift card which can be used towards purchases in store or online at www.videopro.com.au within 12 months of the card’s issue date. By purchasing online, you must accept the VideoPro terms and conditions http://www.videopro.com.au/t-terms-conditions.aspx#terms-6 as well as the gift card conditions which include:
1. Please treat Videopro Gift Cards as cash, they cannot be replaced if lost or stolen.
2. Videopro Gift Cards, once activated, may only be used for purchases in Videopro stores only.
3. Videopro Gift Cards cannot be exchanged for cash.
4. Videopro Gift Cards cannot be used to buy another gift card.
5. The funds available will be verified on request or at the time of purchase at any Videopro register.
6. No change is given and any balance that remains on the Videopro Gift Card can only be used in whole or part against future purchases in Videopro stores.
7. Videopro Gift Cards expire 12 months after purchase.
8. Any balance that remains on the Videopro Gift Card after expiry will not be available for use.
The craft award winners will be selected by the BUFTA judging panel as having demonstrated a significant understanding and excellent representation of cinematography, sound, editing, directing, screenwriting techniques.
SCHOOL AWARD PRIZE
The winning school will receive a $1250 VideoPro gift card which can be used towards purchases in store or online at www.videopro.com.au within 12 months of the card’s issue date. The winning school will be selected by the BUFTA judging panel as having submitted multiple entries which show an overall high quality of filmmaking ability and / or a significant improvement on film quality from their previous year’s entries.
PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD PRIZE
The winner of the People’s Choice award will receive 24 x Red Movie Gift Cards to the value of $612. Each gift card can be used towards movies, popcorn, drinks or ice-cream at any Event, Greater Union, Birch Carroll & Coyle and Village Cinema Australia-wide. The winner of this award will be selected by BUFTA officials via a Facebook ‘like’ competition in which the finalist film with the greatest number of ‘likes’ attained during the period of midday (AEST) on Monday 4th November 2013 and midday (AEST) on Monday 18th November 2013 will win.
GOLD COAST CITY COUNCIL FILMMAKER AWARD
The winner of the Gold Coast City Council Filmmaker Award will receive a cheque in the amount of $300 from the Gold Coast City Council. Only residents of the Gold Coast (residential postcodes 4207 – 4272 inclusive) are eligible to win this prize. The winner will be selected by the BUFTA judging panel.
DEAN’S CHOICE AWARD
The Dean’s Choice award winner will receive a $250 JB Hi-Fi Gift Card. Terms and conditions are available at http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/vouchers/Information/47 . The winner will be selected by the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
INDEMNITY
The entrant agrees to indemnify Bond University Limited and its respective successors, assignees, licensees, and its respective officers, directors, members, agents and employees and hold them harmless from and against any and all claims, liability, losses, damages, costs, expenses (including reasonable legal fees) and penalties arising out of, resulting from, based upon or incurred because of a breach by a competitor of any statement, representation or warranty made by the entrant in the entry form, including a breach of the copyright warranty below, these procedures and regulations or arising from any negligence whatsoever of the entrant or for any claims whatsoever arising from the film.
INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
Copyright considerations are the competitors responsibility. The creator of the film must own copyright in both vision and sound or have suitable permissions in place and be willing to assign the copyright to Bond University Limited for the purposes of promotion. Material which has been created by other persons (including, but not limited to photography, stills, footage or music) must have the appropriate copyright free status or permission from the copyright holder. If your film includes recognisable images of individuals, then permission must be obtained from each individual. Permission must be obtained from the parent/guardian of individuals recognised in the film if they are under 18 years of age. Information provided by the entrant may be used by Bond University for promotional/publicity purposes.
JUDGING
The deliberations of the judging panel remain confidential. All recommendations and decisions taken are binding and final. No correspondence will be entered into on such matters.
PRIVACY
The information supplied on the entry and consent form is being collected by Bond University and will be used and disclosed for the purpose of administering and promoting the competition. Your information may also be shared with the judges and employees of Bond University. Your name and film may be disclosed in print and/or electronic form, without additional compensation. Information will also be posted on Bond University websites and other marketing materials in relation to advertising and promotional activities. If the personal information you provide to Bond University is incomplete and/or inaccurate, Bond University may be unable to process this entry.
